We’re entering an era of career turbulence not seen since the late 90’s protean career shift, when the ‘job for life’ became an anachronism. By August over 3 million UK jobs had already been lost from COVID-caused economic activity decline OECD countries unemployment rates jumped from 5% to 8.5% in March-April 2020. 

For senior employees this has come at a personally conflicting time. Lockdown has made them fearful of retaining their job. But many have used lockdown to understand what is important to them and have little appetite for a return to the ‘hamster wheel’ of corporate or partnership life. This is actually a two-way opportunity. Organisations may find it easier to ‘outplace’ expensive senior executives because they will be more willing to go, having seen the ‘sunny uplands’ of lockdown life. 

But the reality of making a career shift can seem insurmountable to these folk who have become – in effect – institutionalised. …
